What I enjoy most about my job is that the internal auditor’s role is there to add value. While it is not always easy to grasp new concepts and then provide advice to highly knowledgeable experts, I find it very rewarding when the same experts implement my recommendations, which then improve our operations.
My inspiration to pursue a career in our profession came when I was being taught accounting principles at school. I was hooked by the logic behind the ‘double entry’ methods, which aligned with my logical and analytical traits.
Over the last 24 years, I have mostly practiced in internal audit. My career started as an internal auditor in the public sector and subsequently at the Central Bank of Malta. In 2010, I became an auditor at FIMBank and eventually held the chief audit executive role from 2018.
‘The internal auditor’s role is there to add value’
I took charge of the internal audit function for Brainrocket in 2024. The company is a global services entity operating within the online gaming industry. This sector is becoming increasingly regulated and complex, with different licensing jurisdictions presenting different compliance, legal and auditing requirements.
My move into online gaming has given me the opportunity to learn about new risks in a dynamic industry that uses cutting-edge technology, including artificial intelligence (AI). In this era of big data, I believe that AI will reshape financial operations across all businesses, most notably in routine tasks such as data analysis and dashboard reporting. However, it will also impact strategies with financial forecasting, planning and trend identification. AI will also reduce financial costs through earlier identification of specific risks, such as fraud.
I stepped out of my comfort zone in three experiences, particularly with parenthood at the time of our first newborn child, when I accepted the challenge to step-up for the chief internal auditor role in a listed entity and most recently the shift to a completely new industry. All of these challenges led to positive outcomes.
I’m always intrigued with knowing what’s behind the logic
My favourite quote comes from Mahatma Gandhi: ‘An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.’ Unfortunately, these words have gained even greater relevance in today’s world.
If I had law-making powers, I would enact legislation that safeguards vulnerable children as they transition into adulthood, particularly those on the autistic spectrum. This law would make them safe from any exploitation and ensure their ongoing protection.
If I wasn’t in finance, a career in software development would have interested me. I’m always intrigued with knowing what’s behind the logic. This profession seems perfect for me as you solve problems by developing the necessary code.
In my spare time, I practice guitar and enjoy the time I spend with my family on breaks. I also do some leisure sport and like watching football and tennis.
