My first significant career break came when I joined Deloitte, after working as an auditor at a mid-sized firm and lecturing on taxation and finance at Sunway College in Malaysia. Moving to such a large-scale environment required hard work, humility and a passion for learning, but it was an incredible opportunity to grow.

Today, I’m a tax technical manager at Deloitte Malaysia, where I handle technical queries, write publications on tax issues, and conduct in-depth research on evolving tax policies and regulations. I get to apply my expertise while staying engaged with the latest changes in tax legislation, such as the recent introduction of capital gains tax. I find the role both challenging and rewarding.

My father has deeply shaped how I approach my career

My interest in finance stems from a very personal place. Growing up, many of my family members worked as accountants and they became my role models. As a teenager, I often sought their guidance and mentorship, which helped me to understand the importance and versatility of a career in finance.

In fact, my biggest influence has undoubtedly been my father, also an ACCA member. His journey is incredibly inspiring. When he pursued his ACCA qualification, he was facing significant financial challenges, yet he persevered. His determination, resilience and unwavering attitude have deeply shaped how I approach my career.

The ACCA qualification has been incredibly valuable, both in terms of the foundational knowledge it has provided and the global network of professionals it has connected me with. There’s a strong sense of trust, respect and camaraderie among ACCA members, which makes it easy to connect with others in the industry, share insights and even explore new career opportunities.

I aspire to create an environment where people find balance, growth and joy

I’m very proud to say that, as a lecturer, I had a hand in developing and mentoring the next generation of professional accountants. I had the privilege of guiding students along their journeys to becoming qualified professionals, and their stories of overcoming personal and academic challenges are truly rewarding. Seeing students who faced adversity – whether it’s failing exams multiple times, dealing with personal or family issues, or managing the pressures of work and study – finally succeed was deeply fulfilling.

Professionally, I aim to continue growing in my field and to contribute to the development of others. However, on a deeper level, I aspire to create an environment where people can bring their full selves to both their work and personal lives, finding balance, growth and joy in whatever they do.

I play guitar in my spare time. It’s a great way to unwind and express myself creatively. I also love spending time with my plants, which brings a sense of calm and connection to nature.
