A seven-week internal audit assignment in Langkawi, Malaysia, changed my life. The overseas exposure pushed me out of my comfort zone, forcing me to adapt to new environments, cultures and ways of working. It was a short but unforgettable stint that proved invaluable in shaping my career trajectory.
I’m now a portfolio CFO. I work with SMEs to navigate financial complexities, implement systems and ensure compliance while acting as a strategic business partner. The biggest challenge – and what also makes the role dynamic and exciting – is having to adapt quickly to different industries and business models. What I enjoy most is creating real impact, helping businesses to build strong financial foundations, scale sustainably and drive strategic growth.
Careers can be spider webs, weaving diverse experiences
In Singapore and South-East Asia, SMEs form the backbone of the economy, yet many struggle with digital transformation, regulatory compliance and access to financial expertise. The rise of portfolio CFO services is bridging this gap, providing businesses with high-level financial insights without the need for a full-time CFO. I’m particularly excited about leveraging technology and automation to help businesses make smarter financial decisions and drive long-term success.
ACCA has been instrumental in my career. Beyond its strong technical foundation, its global network has opened doors to opportunities I wouldn’t have encountered otherwise. A career break led me to new pathways through ACCA – participating in the #IAmRemarkable programme and securing a volunteer role through an ACCA member. The continuous learning and professional development offered by ACCA have kept me ahead in an ever-evolving industry.
Relationships are the new currency, and I’m grateful for the people I’ve met along the way. A standout moment was when a UK colleague offered to be my daughter’s point of contact when she pursued her studies in the UK – a testament to the power of meaningful professional connections. The ACCA community has also introduced me to inspiring leaders who continue to challenge and motivate me.
I embrace opportunities as they come rather than following a rigid five-year plan. Different seasons bring different work, and my aspiration is to continue making an impact, whether through supporting businesses as a CFO, mentoring finance professionals or advocating for financial literacy among SMEs. Careers are no longer just ladders to climb; they can be spider webs, weaving diverse experiences that make both life and work more fulfilling.
Finance and fashion both require vision, innovation and adaptability
I enjoy creative pursuits such as upcycling clothes and giving them a second life. The blend of sustainability and creativity allows me to unwind. I also value spending time with my family, taking nature walks and exploring different culinary experiences together.
If I weren’t an accountant, I’d probably be a fashion designer. I studied fashion and fabric in secondary school and still have a passion for design. Creativity plays a significant role in both finance and fashion; whether it’s problem-solving in business or transforming an old garment into something new, both require vision, innovation and adaptability. The process is equally fulfilling.
