I’m a financial analyst in Dubai with Cognita Schools. I take care of the regional financial reporting and budgeting, and assist with planning and cashflow forecasting for the organisation, which has over 100 schools in 16 countries and 85,000 students.

Subsidised public school education in the UAE is not accessible to those who are not GCC citizens. Therefore, private education services are essential for the sizeable expatriate population, which is growing as the government provides more opportunities for long-term residency. This is driving demand for education, providing real opportunities for investors and school operators. Nearly 87% of the UAE student population is enrolled in private schools.

Higher construction costs and strong competition are major challenges

Many new private schools have opened in the UAE in recent times, leading to oversupply and strong competition. Higher construction costs and inflation are also major challenges for private education providers. Regulations such as the need for mandatory government approval for fee rises have impacted profitability, and the requirement to hire a percentage of local staff in order to meet Emiratisation targets also adds to the operational challenges.

However, the widespread penetration of digital services in the UAE has created opportunities for educational technology service providers. The nation has established itself as one of the strongest economies in the world, with a high standard of living and some of the best educational opportunities, making it a hub for foreign institutions.

I was inspired to become an accountant because of an aptitude for numbers and a deep appreciation for the importance of financial management. My accountancy tutor at college made me see how the profession has an impact on organisations, helping them to make informed financial decisions and navigate the business world. I realised that accountancy was a dynamic profession that played a crucial role in the success of businesses.

I value my audit background and how it has contributed to my professional development. It gave me analytical thinking and a strong understanding of financial systems. The skills are highly transferable, but my transition to the corporate world was driven by a desire for diverse experiences and challenges.

The fast-paced nature of the UAE’s corporate sector fosters continuous learning and adaptation. This is invigorating as it pushes both personal and professional growth.

I feel a personal responsibility for making a positive impact, however small, on the world

I stepped out of my comfort zone when I started a tax consultancy business in 2017. The work I did in sales, public speaking and marketing while managing a full-time job gave me life-long soft skills. I conducted a session on VAT for L’Oréal Middle East which was attended by 200 people – this was a significant public speaking challenge for me.

My favourite quote is from Mahatma Gandhi: ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world.’ It always encourages me to take personal responsibility for making a positive impact, however small, on the world around me.

My biggest achievement is becoming a qualified ACCA at 21. I am incredibly proud of this, and my ACCA qualification has opened many doors for me professionally.

I would hold corporations accountable for their ecological footprint

If I had law-making powers, I would focus on creating a comprehensive environmental protection law. This law would enforce stricter regulations on industries which contribute to pollution and environmental degradation. It would promote sustainable practices, encourage renewable energy sources, and hold corporations accountable for their ecological footprint, contributing to a healthier planet for future generations.

If I was not in finance, I would love to be a travel influencer, as I could visit different places and experience diverse cultures. It would be great to broaden my horizons and gain a deeper understanding of the world. I really love places where nature is at its true glory.

In my spare time I enjoy sport, especially playing badminton and cricket. I also love watching live stand-up comedy shows. My favourite comedian is Kevin Hart (the backpack guy in Jumanji).
