What I like about my job is that every day brings a new challenge. Complex rules and regulations, and complicated systems make this profession very challenging. I am based in Hong Kong within the regional controller function covering APAC. My role involves analysing and ensuring that the financials are accurate for submission of reports to various constituencies, including local and US regulators. I assist with closing the books and sub-ledgers and consolidating financials at the end of each accounting period.

I originally found the motivation to study accounting from my father. I was rather bad at bookkeeping, so I chose a different specialisation at high school, but just before my classes began, I changed to accounting and never looked back. It was one of the best decisions of my life. My tutor helped me master this subject and overcome any fears I had. Later, I started pursuing chartered accountancy and fell in love with the profession. The respect it gets is what motivates me to stay in this field.

With new technology emerging, the profession is going to change a lot

After graduating from NTU Singapore, I was offered the opportunity to move to Hong Kong for my new role. I arrived in July 2021 and experienced three rounds of Covid-induced quarantine of various lengths in the past two years, which were difficult periods. But I have started to enjoy being in Hong Kong and appreciate its charms. The business environment is very dynamic. It’s fast-paced and people are focused on climbing the corporate ladder. But they also know how to unwind at the end of a busy week; that’s what I love the most about Hong Kong.

In the current environment, the accounting profession needs to be increasingly critical and conscientious to ensure that it maintains integrity. With new technology emerging, the profession is going to change a lot and we need talent with digital skillsets. The most challenging aspect is the ever-changing regulations and new requirements. It is extremely difficult to keep up with this dynamic environment, but with the help of technology and new accounting tools and techniques, it’s becoming more manageable.

Enjoy the moment and stop worrying about the future

To my peers, I would say that we fear failure due to peer and societal pressure, but it’s fine to fail and struggle in your life. If you persevere and are passionate about what you want to achieve, you will definitely succeed. You just have to come up with innovative ways to achieve the level of success you want. Enjoy the moment and stop worrying about the future. We only get one life, so I suggest you take up that hobby you have kept on the backseat and make it your passion.

I love cooking and trying out different cuisines. This takes me to various places, most recently to the Chinese mainland. I adore Chinese cuisine and can’t get enough of it.
