I began my professional journey with ACCA while working at FCOS, an accounting practice in Cork. In 2021, I joined Dairygold as a group financial accountant. The following year, just as I became FCCA, Dairygold set up a distinct treasury function. I seized the opportunity and now serve as head of treasury within the organisation.

Dairygold is one of Ireland’s largest dairy co-operatives and employs around 1,300 people. Its core activities are milk processing, manufacturing added-value dairy ingredients and products, and providing farm inputs. In 2022, it generated turnover of €1.65bn and an operating profit of €40.2m. In line with its diversification strategy Dairygold has recently moved in to the global B2B ingredients solutions business within the life science and health and nutrition sectors, with the acquisition of Vita Actives.

Managing finances in this sector involves unique challenges and opportunities

Environmental sustainability continues to be the biggest challenge facing the dairy industry and agriculture. As an organisation, we are investing in renewable energy, implementing waste reduction strategies, and driving a decarbonisation agenda, all aligning with evolving consumer preferences for eco-friendly and responsible products.

The treasury department is a crucial part of the organisation. That in part is due to the seasonality and complexity of our business and working cashflow needs. Playing a lead finance role in the agrifood sector is particularly rewarding because you contribute to an industry that impacts food production, distribution and sustainability. Managing finances in this sector involves unique challenges and opportunities, offering a chance to blend financial expertise with a meaningful societal impact.

Since joining the treasury department, I have been involved in several important developments for Dairygold. They include securing bank refinancing for the next five years, entering our first ever interest rate hedge, and agreeing bank sustainability targets.

I’m also proud of our department’s active involvement in implementing a group-wide digital strategy. We served as a test case for process digitisation, subsequently integrating it into our operations. The new technology now operates daily and effectively reconciles a substantial volume of bank accounts.

Effective communication in a team will always lead to better outcomes

In my downtime, I enjoy reading, taking leisurely walks and knitting. I make it a point to spend quality time with my loved ones and cherish these moments. I am also a fan of regular spa breaks, particularly in the company of a good friend I worked with and studied alongside for ACCA. We have made these breaks something of a tradition, recognising the importance of a balanced work-life dynamic.

The most important business lesson I have learned is the value of effective communication and collaboration within a team. It will always lead to better decision-making and outcomes. A fulfilling and sustainable career is one that aligns with your skills and passions while prioritising a healthy work environment and job satisfaction.
